Level 2 (Review)

Level 2
By: Lenore Appelhans

Since her untimely death the day before her eighteenth birthday, Felicia Ward has been trapped in Level 2, a stark white afterlife located between our world and the next. Along with her fellow drones, Felicia passes the endless hours reliving memories of her time on Earth and mourning what she’s lost—family, friends, and Neil, the boy she loved.

Then a girl in a neighboring chamber is found dead, and nobody but Felicia recalls that she existed in the first place. When Julian—a dangerously charming guy Felicia knew in life—comes to offer Felicia a way out, Felicia learns the truth: If she joins the rebellion to overthrow the Morati, the angel guardians of Level 2, she can be with Neil again.

Suspended between Heaven and Earth, Felicia finds herself at the center of an age-old struggle between good and evil. As memories from her life come back to haunt her, and as the Morati hunt her down, Felicia will discover it’s not just her own redemption at stake… but the salvation of all mankind.

Oh. My. Gosh. I absolutely loved this book. My level 2 ARC sat on my shelf for months, I even took it to England, wanting to read it but I never got the chance, and honestly I would eschew it and choose instead a new release. My mistake...and what a lamentable mistake. This book is beyond awesome. For fans of world-building, this is the book for you.

Level 2 is a sort of limbo, where souls are sent and kept until they are ready to go to level 3, Heaven. Except the people in level 2's stay is prolonged because of Angels, known as the Morati, trying to harness the energy being generated by the people in level 2, so they can leave.

I think my favorite part of Level 2 is this perverse love triangle between Julian, Felecia, and Neil. Julian is sort of Felecia's ex, and when he left her to deal with the aftermath of their relationship, alone, she broke down. When she is sent to live with her grandmother, Neil is there to pick up the pieces. After her death, she wants nothing to do with Julian, and Neil is her only motivation to keep moving on. I love Felecia's interaction with Julian...and if I'm being honest, if I were to ship a couple today, it would be Felecia + Julian. Not that I hate Neil because I don't and I even like his relationship with Felecia. But to me, it's just the platonic ideal, not real love. Plus...I think Julian is fuego (fire). Julian is passion and I think that I understand him and I just can't get enough.

Level 2 leaves me wanting more now. I can't wait to read more. I am a fan of Lenore Appelhans and can't wait to get my hands on a copy of Level 3.

Level 2 will published on 1/15/13.

ARC was obtained from Publisher at BEA.
